LESSON Grade: 5th Grade
Subject Area: Evaluating Internet Sources
Content Standard: 3b Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources
Lesson Title: Relevant and Reliable: Finding and Evaluating information on the Internet
Time needed: 60 minutes

Short description of the lesson: In pairs, students will be assigned a famous explorer to research. They will have a notecatcher where they are looking for specific information. Using the links provided, some will use an Internet site called AllAboutExplorers.com and some will use an alternate site, such as Enchanted Learning. After they take notes, the pair will compare the information they found. Students will notice that their information is vastly different. This will lead to a discussion about reliability of information on the Internet. They will then make a plan for how they could eliminate fictional information and verify factual information.

Student worksheets are included below. Note: On the worksheet, right below where it says "Explorer Treasure Hunt", there are either one, two, or three astericks. The ones that are the easiest for students have one asterick, two are of average difficulty, and three are more challenging. Also, be aware that more detailed lesson plans are available on the allaboutexplorers.com site. For the purposes of this one day lesson, some elements of those lesson plans have been condensed. It is recommended that this lesson be presented early in the year and NOT at the same time as when 5th grade explorer research is being introduced. This is not designed to be a true research lesson, but rather an Internet Evaluation lesson.
